Affiliate Marketing for Beginners: What Creators Should Know First

Affiliate marketing isn't just adding a link to your post. You recommend a product, someone buys through your tracked referral, and you earn a commission. The real skill is choosing what to recommend and making the recommendation useful.

1. Pick a Problem, Not a Commission

Start with what your audience needs, then find a product that solves it.

A product with a high commission is useless if nobody in your audience wants it.

2. Check the Terms Before You Post

  • Commission rate

  • Attribution window

  • Return/refund rules

  • Qualifying-purchase conditions

  • Payout terms

These vary by affiliate program. YouTube notes that rates and attribution windows are set by individual brands/retailers, and commissions can be reversed after cancellations, refunds or returns.

3. Make the Content Useful

“Buy this” is weak affiliate content.

  • Worth it or skip?

  • What I use for…

  • What I'd buy again

  • A real comparison

  • A setup/tutorial

Help the viewer make a decision. The link becomes the next step.

4. Track the Whole Journey

Don't stop at clicks.

Views → Clicks → Orders → Commission

Lots of clicks but few orders? Check the product, price, offer, landing page and audience intent before blaming the content.

5. Check Where Your Link Works

Affiliate links behave differently across platforms. For example, YouTube says URLs in Shorts comments and descriptions are non-clickable, while YouTube Shopping product links can be clickable.

Always check the platform's current link rules before telling viewers where to click.

6. Disclose It Clearly

If you earn from a recommendation, say so.

ASCI accepts “Affiliate” as a disclosure label in India and requires disclosures to be upfront and prominent. The FTC also recommends clear disclosure of affiliate relationships near the recommendation or link.

The Creator Rule

Don't ask: “How do I get clicks?”

Ask: “What decision can I make easier for my audience?”

Useful content earns the click. The link earns the commission.

Quick Check

  • Relevant product

  • Terms checked

  • Useful content

  • Working tracking link

  • Clear disclosure

  • Orders tracked

Fact-check note: Commission terms vary by program. Platform link behaviour varies by platform and can change. Disclosure guidance above is based on current ASCI and FTC guidance.
